The beginning of my story…

My career started by becoming a counselor in a substance abuse treatment facility. After going through treatment and being introduced to AA in 1985, I was invited back by the treatment center I had completed to be their first behavioral tech (!) and then a counselor. In the beginning, I didn’t have any specific education or training in how to help other alcoholics and addicts recover. Much like the AA model, what I had to offer was my strength, hope and experience.  In other words, my own example and a sense of hope stemming from belonging to a larger community. Just feeling like you are not alone is a giant part of the process. More on my career later…

At the Addictions Training Institute we can offer you a path to earning certification as a drug counselor. We offer a wide range of courses designed to meet the certification requirements in most states.  There are many different types of licensing and certification. Of course, the rules and requirements vary from state to state. And, even within a state there can be multiple levels of certification and licensure.

Many of these programs require thousands of hours of work experience and years of education that can easily cost 50 thousand dollars or more.

The beauty of ATI is the coursework is fully online. You don’t have to quit your job or change your work hours to take classes. You don't have to move or drive each way to school. You get to learn on your own schedule when it is convenient for you. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t deadlines or due dates for assignments, just that you have flexibility in doing them when your schedule permits.

Some people think that online learning doesn’t allow for interaction with instructors. This is another way that the Addictions Training Institute is different. There are scheduled phone and internet based meetings in which you get to speak directly with your instructor. You can ask questions, get feedback and even learn from the questions and problems posed by others in the class.

Back to my story…

As I progressed in my career, I have worked at nearly every level of a treatment center – from the most entry level behavior tech to an executive director of a facility with more than 150 beds. All of the time I have been in the field I have felt good about the work I have done helping others get their lives into a better space.  I have been happily married for over 25 years – and I have 4 wonderful and healthy children.

None of this would be possible if I had not remained clean and sober. I know that part of the reason I have been so successful and happy is that my life’s work has been helping others in one way or another. Maybe this is what you are searching for.

Let’s face it; money can’t buy happiness, peace of mind or contentment. These things come from living a life you are proud of, from doing things that you believe are right.  A life serving others can bring a sense of contentment and inner peace that is hard to achieve in any other way.

So what is our alcohol and drug certification program like?
We designed our courses to work with the IC&RC requirements in mind. The coursework consists of 6 courses and a practicum course.  The courses cover the topics you need to become an effective counselor. Courses like Counseling Methods, Ethics, and Case Management. There is a quiz each week, around 4 assignments during the course and a weekly interactive discussion online.

Our courses and training won’t be all that you have to do to earn certification. Every state has different requirements; but they all expect a certified addictions counselor to have work experience, supervision and to pass an exam. This is all in addition to the hundreds of hours of class time that must also be done.

According to the IC&RC “The Alcohol & Drug Counselor credential is the foundation for working in diverse professional settings where addiction services are provided. . . .The Alcohol & Drug Counselor credential requires professionals to demonstrate competency through experience, education, supervision, and the passing of an examination.”
